A knight of the grip has many inconveniences to contend with, and not only that, but often his very life is in danger. Such is the case with John Duncan, a traveling man, who was obliged to remain overnight at a small inn located in the far west. The hotel-keeper, an unscrupulous Italian, with the help of two ruffians, schemes to steal Duncan's money and do away with him.
Big Hearted Jim, the sheriff, loves the tomboyish Nugget Nell ( Dorothy Gish ), who runs a hash house in the mining country, but although she has romantic feelings, they are not aroused by Jim. Nell agrees to an old miner friend's request to care for his "child," Nell is shocked to meet the six-foot girl, but she cares for her just the same. Nell falls in love with the City Chap, out West to look after his mining property, but he barely notices her, having become intrigued by the Ingenue, whom he met on the stagecoach. The jealous Nell steals stylish clothes to allure him, but she has trouble walking in French high-heels.
The girl is a school teacher in a cattle town, the hero a rather wild cowboy of good intentions but addicted to gambling. The girl saves him from a false accusation of robbery and this awakens his better instincts.
John Curry is a friend of the Navajos who fails in his attempts to keep the white man from exploiting the tribe's secret altars. Realizing that there is oil to be found on the reservation, evil Will Newton gains entry to the area by posing as a trail guide for Elias Manton, an archeologist, and his daughter Mary.
Unable to pay her notes, Ann Bradford, owner of the Circle C, decides to auction off a half-interest in her ranch. Matt Stark, a crooked land dealer, holds Ann's notes. His efforts to buy the ranch have been refused and his instructs his henchman, Barlow, and his other henchmen to make certain that nobody bids on the ranch. Clint Buckley rides into town on the day of the auction, overhears Stark's instructions to his henchies, and decides to attend the sale. Barlow attempts to intimidate him, they fight, Buckley wins and his bid of $25,000 wins him a half-interest in the Circle C. But, Stark, isn't finished yet in his efforts to get the ranch, especially since a couple of his hirelings are on the Circle C payroll.

Charlie, a neighboring miner who also loves Barbara, doesn't believe it and takes Blue Bird to his mine. Complications ensue.

A little girl and her father are among the settlers in a small western town. The father is very friendly with the neighboring Indian tribe and is presented with a quaint piece of metal representing a dragon's claw, the tribe's good luck omen. Some time later, while traveling with his daughter, he is held up by a band of bandits and shot dead. A bandit takes from him this dragon's claw. Years pass. The little girl has grown into a beautiful young lady. She marries. Their love is very real and their life most happy. He decides to go out west to see a mine that yields the richest gold and his wife expresses a desire to go along with him. The mine is christened "The Dragon's Claw," because of an Indian charm the man owns. While out on a western desert, he shows the dragon's claw to his wife. She then recognizes it as the kind her father possessed when he was killed. She has understood it to be the only one of its kind. She now believes it is her husband who killed her father.
When easterner Jack Steel gets into trouble with the law again, his father sends him to his ranch out west. There he and Alice Duncan become attracted to each other. Cowhand Slim was planning to marry Alice and now kidnaps her. When Slim's girl friend learns of Slim's interest in Alice, she tells Jack where Alice is and he heads out alone to face the three kidnapers.
Bored with the ranch, Buck's girl goes off to the city and gets involved (innocently) in a brothel. When Buck brings a herd of cattle to town, a streetwalker lures him to the house just in time for him to save his girl from Martin.
"Flash" Lanning returns to Bozzam City from the East to put an end to cattle rustling. Gloria Hallowell, who has known him by reputation, falls in love with Lanning but believes that he loves Ellen Bosworth, an eastern "lady." Campan, the leader of the rustlers, hoping to lure Lanning into a trap, kidnaps both girls. Lanning rescues the girls, punishes Campan, and indicates to Gloria that she is the girl for him.
